OpenAI to Launch a Brand-New Search Engine on May 9th! Should Google Worry?
5 Reasons ChatGPT Will Rival Google Search Next Week!
On May 3rd, Lior S shared some news. Lior S used to work at Mila and taught at MIT. He found that OpenAI made a new website:
search.chatgpt.com. But the website does not work yet. This means OpenAI wants to make a search engine. They want to compete with Google. Google is the biggest search engine company.
OpenAI made their website look different. The new home page has a box. You can type in the box. It says “Ask ChatGPT anything.” The Information is a company. They said OpenAI was making a search engine in February. They were using ChatGPT to make it. But they did not tell many people.
Many people have said OpenAI will share more news on May 9th at 10 AM.
OpenAI made an interesting move by announcing its news on May 9th. This was done right before Google’s yearly “Google I/O” event on May 14th. OpenAI wanted to get attention before Google’s big conference.
In February, a top tech news site called The Information shared an exclusive story. They said OpenAI and Microsoft’s Bing would work together. The two companies want to make a new search engine to take on Google.
Right now, the world’s top five search engines are Google, Bing, Yahoo, Baidu, and Yandex. Google controls about 90% of the market. It has been the leader for many years with no strong rivals.
Many people think OpenAI will be hard for Google to beat. They say Google has a real challenger now.
Google has worked on its search technology for a long time. It is very popular and used by many people.
However, it still has problems with how well it works and how easy it is to use.
5 Reasons
There are too many ads on Google. Users have complained about this issue for over a decade. About half of the top ten links in Google searches are ads. This really hurts the user experience. Many of these ads are also fake.
Google’s search results have lots of dead or outdated links. This wastes users’ time by making them visit useless pages. The data updates are also very slow.
Keyword matching has limits. It can’t deeply understand the context of a search. Old search engines mostly use keyword matching to give results. This method might miss the meaning and context of the text. It can lead to less accurate results.
Let’s say you search for “apple”. You might see results about the Apple company, Apple gadgets, or the Apple fruit. But maybe you only want to know about one of those. The search engine doesn’t understand exactly what you need.
Google Search gives you results based on what you like and look at. This is like TikTok’s tips. But it can make a “bubble” where you only see things you agree with. This cuts down on the range of info you get. Over time, it can trap you in your own “info cocoon”.
The custom search above works by Google saving your search and browsing data.
So a lot of your private data is taken and used to show you ads.
So, can AI companies really make good search tools? Bing (now Copilot) has always been far behind Google. Not many use it.
Last year, OpenAI’s GPT-4 AI helped Bing grow a ton in search power, users, and money. It has over 100 million users worldwide. This shows people like AI-powered search.
Also, the AI search company Perplexity AI just got $62.7 million and is valued at $1.04 billion. This shows it has promise and that investors like it.
Perplexity AI has a search box you can type in, just like Google Search.
How can someone recover quickly from a cold? Perplexity lists 6 pieces of content with real website addresses. This is important. It tells users the information is real and reliable.
However incorrect source URLs can affect the output of large language models.
Perplexity can find pictures and videos. It can take pictures too. It is a lot like Bing from Microsoft. OpenAI is now in the search engine game. What will Google do? We will have to wait and see.
